Kuala Lumpur International Conference on Biomedical Engineering
(Biomed) is held every two years since the year 2000, and
is organised by the Department
of Biomedical Engineering, University of Malaya.
For the year 2006, MSMBE,
along with Department of Biomedical Engineering, Inje
University, Korea; have agreed to coorganise the event.
The succesful international conference was held from 11 to
14 December 2006 at Palace
of the Golden Horses, Kuala Lumpur.
The conference attracted almost 250 delegates from around
the world, including biomedical researchers and industrial
players from Northern America, European, Australasian and
Asian countries. The conference was endorsed by IFMBE
and the conference proceedings will be published by Springer.
Main sponsorship for the conference came from Healthtronics
and University
of Malaya.
The Annual General Meeting was also held during the conference,
on 14 December 2006. The meeting was attended by 17 members,
and the main highlight of the meeting was the election of
new office bearers for the 2006-2008 term.
World Congress 2006

World
Congress on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering 2006
was held in Seoul, Korea. This congress is conducted every
3 years and is one of the largest biomedical engineering conferences
in the world.
MSMBE was represented
by quite a number of delegates, notably by Prof. Dr. Kwan-Hoong
Ng (Vice-President) and Mr. Nahrizul Adib Kadri (Secretary).
Other members attending the congress includes Raha Mat Ghazali,
Azlan Che Ahmad, Nashrul Fazli Mohd. Nasir, Fatimah Ibrahim,
and Azman Hamid.
The highlight of the congress was the official inclusion
of MSMBE as an
affiliate organisation of IFMBE,
thus representing biomedical engineering research interests
in Malaysia.
Formation of MSMBE
2 September 2004
The formation of MSMBE
was materialised during the 2nd
Kuala Lumpur International Conference on Biomedical Engineering
(Biomed 2004), which was held on 2-4 September
2004 at the Hilton Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.
The meeting was attended by 20 local participants of the
conference, and also Prof. Joachim Nagel and Prof. J.C. Barbanel
from IFMBE.
The main agenda of the meeting is to form a protem committee
that will seek to register MSMBE with the Malaysian Registrar
of Societies, and the role MSMBE will play as an affiliate
to IFMBE.
The conference was officiated by the Minister of Higher Education,
Dato' Sri Dr. Haji Shafie Haji Mohd. Salleh, whom represented
the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad
Badawi. The conference was supported by IUPESM,
IFMBE,
and other organisations including the National Heart Institute,
Institute of Engineers Malaysia, Ministry of Health, IEEE
(Malaysia chapter), and Tourism
Malaysia. The main corporate sponsor for Biomed 2004 was
Healthtronics.
